A Traveller’s Heart

A Traveller’s Heart – Neither Here nor There, but the Sum of Its Parts

Travellers.  We’re here and there, blended in the crowd.  Sometimes, as I’ve found in Wellington, NZ and Sydney, Oz, we are the crowd.

In New Zealand and Australia, they offer many citizens of the world incredible opportunities.  They embrace the European tradition of the “Overseas Experience” or “gap year” – taking time to travel, perhaps after finishing school, or just cause.  As an American, I wish I had been introduced to the phenomenon of the working holiday sooner, and had someone to tell me in fact, it is absolutely do-able.

This show A Traveller’s Heart artistically renders the overseas experience with these themes:

  • exploration, i.e. tramping – v. Kiwi term for “hiking” or “following a barely defined trail over an epic mountain”
  • relationships and cultural definitions of dating, ex. “Kiwi boys are tin men, they will not make a move unless lubricated by drink.”
  • home.  How do you answer the questions?
  1. “Where are you from?” The US : NC  (yeah, that’s where Michael Jordan played college basketball…)
  2. “How long are you staying?”
  3. Are you visiting the country, or is the country visiting you?

The artistic rendering comprises of performance poetry, photography, theatre, comedy, music, and audience participation.  The show entertains, but it also inspires.  My greater goal is to present the incredible opportunities that I’ve lived to others who might enjoy them, to begin “a culture of conversations, a myriad of  colours…”

The intent is to involve local talent who explore cultural artistry, or who have their own travel stories to share.  I am also keen to do workshops with local schools and communities as the show travels.

The show premiered in New Zealand and has debuted in the States in Santa Cruz, California.  I am currently booking tour dates, so please drop me a line if this aligns with your venue/festival!
